Baby Goes To Market. Written by Atinuke and illustrated by Angela Brooksbank. Walker Books 2017.

Baby Goes to Market is a bright fun counting book that tells of Baby’s journey with his Mama through a West African Market. Baby makes friends with the market traders and unbeknown to his Mama, he is given 6 bananas, 5 oranges, 4 chin chin biscuits, 3 roasted sweetcorn and 2 pieces of coconut.

Winner of Matchical Prize 2018 (Ages 2-4 yrs). Winner of Children's Africana Book Award 2018.

In her debut picture book, Brooksbank offers bright, bustling tableaux of shoppers, vendors, and goods. The smiling, all-black cast sort through myriad wares, while the text keeps up its rhythm, introducing both typical items bought in a West African market and a gentle lesson in arithmetic as Baby alternately snacks and stashes his gifts. Indeed, no one will be able to resist this baby.

You can feel the love that the author and illustrator of Baby Goes to Market have for West Africa, both of whom grew up there ... Each page is gloriously filled with tantalising pictures of delicious things to eat and colourful things to buy, and there’s a gentle introduction to simple counting too.

Illustrations are so beautiful. I bought the book with the intent for my niece to enjoy the story, but she becomes mesmerized by the illustrations; laughing, smiling, giggling. Not to mention, the mention of “Baby” very often appeals to the child's sense of excitement. Highly recommend for a child’s board book collection.
